Engineer's Selection Guide

Calibration Equipment Selection Guide

A Decision Framework for Temperature Calibration Engineers

Five decision steps — temperature range, accuracy requirement, portability, probe count, and documentation standard — to match the right calibration instrument to your application. Start with your measurement requirement, not the equipment specification.

1

Temperature Range

Define Your Temperature Range First

The temperature range of the sensors you calibrate determines the instrument family. No single calibrator covers −80°C to +1200°C. Match the calibrator range to your coldest and hottest calibration points, with 10–20% headroom beyond the extremes.

RangeInstrument TypeNotes
−100°C to 0°CSub-zero dry block or liquid bathDry block for field; liquid bath for lab accuracy
0°C to 650°CPortable or bench dry blockMost widely used range — portable dry block covers both field and lab
650°C to 1000°CIndustrial dry bath calibratorNo liquid bath covers this range — dry block only
1000°C to 1200°CHigh-temp dry blockAMS2750 and furnace survey applications
Multi-point −80°C+Liquid bath systemMulti-probe RTD comparison, pharmaceutical validation

Accuracy Requirement

How Accurate Does Your Calibrator Need to Be?

Apply the 4:1 accuracy ratio rule: the calibrator's expanded uncertainty must be no more than one-quarter of the instrument tolerance you are verifying.

Field check / QA hold release

Sensor tolerance ±1°C or coarser

Portable dry block — ±0.25°C or better sufficient

Process control calibration

Sensor tolerance ±0.5°C

Bench dry block with insert calibration — ±0.1°C target

Pharmaceutical IQ/OQ

Sensor tolerance ±0.2–0.5°C (protocol-defined)

Liquid bath with NABL certificate — ±0.05°C or better

Reference lab / NABL

Sensor tolerance specified per ISO/IEC 17025 CMC

Precision liquid bath + certified reference probe

3

Portability

Portable, Bench, or Both?

The most common specification error in this dimension is buying a bench liquid bath when the primary use case is field service calibration of installed sensors.

Field / on-site

Portable dry block — battery or mains, single person, <10 kg, no fluid

Permanent lab

Bench dry block or liquid bath — stability prioritised over portability

Both field + lab

Portable dry block for field; liquid bath for lab multi-probe work — separate instruments for separate needs

4

Number of Probes

Single Probe or Multi-Probe Comparison?

The number of probes you need to calibrate simultaneously is often the deciding factor between a dry block and a liquid bath.

1 probe at a timeDry block is efficient and cost-effectiveInsert calibration covers the reference
2–4 probes simultaneouslyDry block with multi-hole insert, or small liquid bathConfirm insert uniformity across all holes
5–8+ probes simultaneouslyLiquid bath — immersion allows any geometryBest for mapping calibrations, incoming QA batches

5

Documentation & Compliance

Documentation and Compliance Requirements

The documentation requirement is often set by your customer, quality standard, or regulator — not by your own preference. Confirm this before specifying the instrument.

Factory calibration certificate

General industry — most applications

Typically included with new instrument; provides traceability statement

NABL-traceable calibration certificate

Regulated industries, supplier audits

Issued by an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited lab; required for regulatory submissions

IQ/OQ documentation package

Pharmaceutical, medical device, defence

Confirms installation and operational qualification at your site

21 CFR Part 11 / audit trail

FDA-regulated pharmaceutical manufacturing

Electronic records, electronic signatures; requires specific controller option

Common Mistakes

Specification Mistakes to Avoid

01Buying a dry block for multi-probe pharmaceutical comparison — insert hole count limits throughput and bath accuracy is better for RTD comparison.
02Ignoring insert calibration cost — dry block accuracy depends on traceable insert characterisation, which is an ongoing cost not always included in the instrument price.
03Specifying ultra-tight stability (±0.01°C) when the application tolerates ±0.5°C — this adds cost without measurement benefit.
04Buying a high-range instrument when only low/ambient range is needed — performance at the extremes is better than mid-range on a lower-specified instrument.
05Not checking portability weight when specifying for field service — some 'portable' calibrators are 15–25 kg and impractical for single-person field use.
