Calibration Equipment Buying Guide
How to Choose the Right Calibrator for Your Industry
Calibration equipment is critical to product quality and regulatory compliance. This guide walks you through the decision criteria — accuracy, temperature range, portability, and compliance — to match the right calibrator to your application.
Types of Calibration Equipment
Three main types serve different applications. Each has trade-offs between accuracy, portability, and cost.
Liquid Calibration Baths
−100°C to +270°C
Immersion calibrators achieving ±0.01–0.05°C accuracy with highest uniformity
Best for: Laboratory precision calibration, pharmaceutical validation, multi-probe comparison
Best for:
- Best-in-class accuracy (±0.01°C)
- Excellent uniformity for multi-probe work
- Oil/water/salt options for any range
Considerations:
- •Requires bench space and water cooling
- •Longer stabilization time
- •Higher initial cost
Dry Block Calibrators
−100°C to +1200°C
Portable and stationary calibrators with no liquid, offering speed and safety
Best for: Field service, on-site commissioning, high-temperature thermocouple calibration
Best for:
- Portable and lightweight
- Fast warm-up and stabilization
- No chemical exposure or spills
Considerations:
- •Slightly lower accuracy than liquid baths
- •Limited multi-probe capacity
- •Limited by insert air gap
Temperature & Humidity Chambers
10–50°C with 30–95% RH
Compact and benchtop chambers for temperature–humidity calibration of sensors
Best for: Relative humidity sensor calibration, combined T&H calibration, compact labs
Best for:
- Combined T&H measurement in one chamber
- Compact benchtop design
- Uniform chamber for humidity control
Considerations:
- •Limited temperature range
- •Stabilization time for humidity
- •Electricity and plumbing required
Key Specs to Understand
Before selecting a calibrator, answer these six questions to define your actual requirements.
Temperature range needed?
Identify min/max temp required: ambient, sub-zero, or high-temp (>650°C)?
Accuracy requirement?
Field service (±0.5–1°C), lab (±0.05°C), or pharma validation (±0.01°C)?
Location of use?
Mobile field technician (portable), stationary lab, or temporary on-site?
How many sensors at once?
Single probe per calibration (dry block OK), or multiple probes (liquid bath better)?
Regulatory compliance?
NABL certificates needed? Pharmaceutical IQ/OQ/PQ? Aerospace AMS 2750G?
Budget and support?
Equipment cost + annual calibration service + training + spare inserts?
